The Whole Earth Bowed Down To You Srila Prabhupada

680325rc.sf Conversations
Prabhupada: (Laughs) Yes. Your materialistic life is full of anxiety.
That is the main symptom of materialistic life. We are always anxious,
everyone. President Johnson, he's anxious, "Oh, my presidency is going
on. Now I shall no longer be president." He's thinking, very much
anxious. And, similarly, you are also thinking, another man is also
thinking. Everyone is anxious. Nobody is free from anxiety. And when
you go to Krsnaloka or any Vaikuntha planet, the first thing is that
you have no anxiety. That is spiritual life. Always joyful. (Baby
cooing). No anxiety. Because she knows, "My mother is there. She will
protect me from everything." So no anxiety means when you know that
"Krsna will protect me," you have no anxiety. To become in the family
of Krsna. We are already in the family of Krsna, but in a different
way. Just like if one is in the prisonhouse, he is in the government's
protection, but in a different way.
Yamuna: Swamiji, Janaki-devi wrote me this very nice letter where she
had a dream that there was a gigantic platform above the surface of
the earth, and all of our devotees, our Godbrothers and sisters and
you, were assembled on this gigantic platform for sankirtana. And we
had such a thunderous joy, magnificent kirtana, that the whole
earth... When you said, "Jaya om param paramahamsa," the whole earth
bowed down to you like this. And we were all crying, so happy. And you
said, "Now my Guru Maharaja is satisfied." That was her dream.
Prabhupada: Thank you very much. Yes. Thank you for your dreaming like
that. It is very pleasing to me. Yes, I want to see like that. (Break)

IF NOT FOR YOU ~ Sung by George Harrison

~~~
This material nature is working under My direction, O son of Kunti, and it is producing all moving and unmoving beings. By its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.
— Bhagavad-Gita As It Is, 9.10
~~~

If not for you, babe, I couldn't find the door
Couldn't even see the floor
I'd be sad and blue if not for you.

If not for you, baby, I'd lay awake all night
Wait for the morning light
To shine in through
But it will not be new if not for you.

If not for you, my sky would fall, rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all
I'd be lost if not for you
And you know it's true.

If not for you, my sky would fall, rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all
Oh what would I do if not for you ?

If not for you, winter would have no spring
I couldn't hear the robins sing
I just wouldn't have a clue
Anyway it wouldn't ring true if not for you
If not for you, if not for you.

Quotes From Srila Prabhupada Regarding Farms

Now... We have come to the open field. How it is nice. And so long we were passing through that congested areas -- hellish, simply hellish. And now here is open space. How it is nice.

Hari-sauri: To enter into a city is so imposing on your consciousness.

Prabhupada: Up to that point, simply rubbish, all papers thrown here and there. People are living in... Now see here, how it is open and pleasing. Organize this farm project. Farm. (background talking)

Hari-sauri: He's just saying that in the West one requires a great deal of capital. To start a farm, to get the land, you need a lot of money because land is very expensive. And also we have to use modern farming techniques because we have so few men to run the farms.

Prabhupada: No, you show example. People will do automatically. When the people find it is very nice, they will take.

Hari-sauri: Should we try to make an effort to have our householders go and live on the farms, a special effort? If it's ready to do that?

Prabhupada: Why householders? Everyone. Hare Krsna.(japa)

Ramesvara: In America there is a very big emphasis on getting people to join us by moving into our temples. The temple presidents are very eager to get as many people to move in as possible, but in the long run most people cannot come up to the standard.

Prabhupada: Therefore I am [advocating] farms.

Ramesvara: So they have to be encouraged to have a little bit of Krsna consciousness in their own home, make their home a temple.

Prabhupada: No, let them go to the farm, New Vrindaban.

Ramesvara: Many people... Most people in the world, they are grhamedhis, and they cannot give it up so easily.

Prabhupada: "No, you remain...Come here with your wife, children. You remain grhamedhi."

Jagadisa: New Vrindaban is very austere. If we build little bungalows with modern convenience...

Prabhupada: Oh, yes.

Jagadisa: There has to be some modern convenience.

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Then we shall do that.

Ramesvara: But for many people who live in the cities, they have their jobs already. They don't want to give it up...

Say, in America, most people live in the cities, and they already have their job, and they are set in their ways.

Prabhupada: But you said that there is unemployment also.

Ramesvara: To a certain extent. But there are still 250,000,000 people. So most of them...

Prabhupada: So those who are unemployed, let them come to us. We shall give them employment.

Ramesvara: Yes. But for the mass population...

Prabhupada: Well, gradually you will increase and...

Ramesvara: We have to give them something that they can do in their home.

Prabhupada: Oh, yes.

Ramesvara: Because it is impractical to think that they will give up everything and move into the temple.

Prabhupada: No, those who are unemployed, let them come. We shall give them employment.

Jagadisa: On the farm.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Ramesvara: For those who are unemployed, that's attractive.

Jagadisa: But for those who are already employed...

Ramesvara: But most people have jobs.

Prabhupada: Eh?

Ramesvara: Many people already have their jobs and their families.

Prabhupada: All right, let them not come, but those who are unemployed, let them come.

Ramesvara: But what...? For those people who already have their jobs, instead of...

Prabhupada: That job... They will be very soon jobless. Don't worry. (laughs) They will come. They will be obliged to come. Now they have got job, but as the days are advancing in Kali-yuga, they'll be jobless.

Hari-sauri: So we can expect that material conditions are going to become very much worse than this.

Prabhupada: They may come or not. We don't care for it. Let us establish an ideal society. That is the...

Jagadisa: If someone who is well-off wants to become a devotee, shall we encourage him to give up all of his material well-being or shall we ask him to instead put a temple in his house and encourage him how to make his house into a temple and make his whole family Krsna conscious?

Prabhupada: And what is your material well-being? Everyone is going hundred miles for well-being. Is that well-being? Either they may go by motorcar or by train... And as soon as there is -- what is called? -- bottle-neck, they become very much disturbed: "How to go to the office?" Where is well-being?

Ramesvara: Say, the Christian religion... The Christian religion has millions of followers.

Prabhupada: But what is the meaning of these followers? They do not understand anything. Simply by rubber-stamp they are follower.

Ramesvara: But if we can get a mass following, it is only possible by preaching to them little bit at a time.

Prabhupada: Yes. By your ideal life, ideal teaching, you'll get. This Christian or any religion, what is the use of that? It's not at all religion. It's simply rubber-stamp...

Ramesvara: Many people think that if you become a Hare Krsna you have to shave your head.

Prabhupada: That is very good.

Ramesvara: But it scares them and it keeps them from joining us.

Prabhupada: No, you save so much barbers' expenses. (laughter)

Hari-sauri: So much inconvenience for washing.

Ramesvara: These are misunderstandings that confuse people.

Prabhupada: The whole life is misunderstanding, material life.

Ramesvara: But we want them to chant Hare Krsna. That's the main thing.

Prabhupada: Why they are envious of us? When we live very nicely, they are envious that "These people do not do anything, and they are living so nicely."

Ramesvara: They will not be so envious if they see that people who dress in Western style and keep their families and keep their jobs are also chanting Hare Krsna.

Prabhupada: We say...We say that, that we simply say, that "You change your consciousness."

Ramesvara: Not change your dress, but change your consciousness.

Prabhupada: No, we never said. If you prefer that kind of dress, costly, you prefer it, but we are simplified.

Ramesvara: It's our choice.

Prabhupada: Yes.

Hari-sauri: As a person becomes more purified, then he'll simplify himself anyway. And if he really cultivates a desire to...

Prabhupada: Now, nowadays coat-pant is very costly. If you can spend your money, costly dress, we have no objection. Then you have to earn more; you have to work more. Therefore we are simplified.

Ramesvara: Ultimately, it is the best thing.

Prabhupada: If they want to come in that dress, come in. If you want, come in.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mahamsa: And this is a very nice thing he said, Prabhupada. He said that "We want to improve things in the countryside to an extent that people from the cities start running to the villages."
Prabhupada: Yes. That I want. I... Everywhere I go and say, how these rascals...? So much land is lying, and these rascals are not developing. And they are making... What is that? Coal stone. Coal. They are interested with these bricks and stones, not green vegetables. Such a rascal government. Give them facility. We know how to do it. Annad bhavanti bhutani parjanyad anna-sambhavah, yajnad bhavati parjanyah [Bg. 3.14]. Let them engage in kirtana. There will be more water for gardening, and it will be moist, and then produce fodder for the animals and food for you. And animal gives you milk. That is Vrndavana life. And they are absorbed in this so-called opulence. Krsna has taken birth. They are bringing so many nice, pleasant foodstuff, very well-dressed and ornamented. These are description. In the morning we were reading. How they were happy, the inhabitants of Vrndavana with Krsna and living and cows. That I want to introduce. At any cost do it and... Don't bother about big, big buildings. It is not required. Useless waste of time. Produce. Make the whole field green. See that. Then whole economic question solved. Then you eat sumptuous. Eat sumptuously. The animal is happy. The animal even does not give milk; let them eat and pass stool and urine. That is welcome. After all, eating, they will pass stool. So that is beneficial, not that simple milk is beneficial. Even the stool is beneficial. Therefore I am asking so much here and..., "Farm, farm, farm, farm..." That is not my program-Krsna's program. Annad bhavanti bhutani [Bg. 3.14]. Produce greenness everywhere, everywhere. Vrndavana. It is not this motorcar civilization. If it has taken in his brain, then it is to be understood that he can do this plan. He'll be able. Somebody said that he is eager to see me. Hm?
Mahamsa: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: Yes.
Mahamsa: Caitya-guru was saying.
Prabhupada: Caitya-guru?
Indian devotee (1): Actually I was wondering that I should go and conduct him, 'cause last time, when he met our devotees, when he mentioned that he was very eager to have your darsana in Bombay, then you were not feeling well. So you were unable to see him.
Prabhupada: But if he can come to see me... This program he's taking. The whole world will be happy.
business, that requires so many other things. But if you take to agriculture you can do it immediately. Krsi-go-raksya. That... We are going to do that. Krsi... This is beginning, family life, maintenance, body and soul together. This is the beginning. Business is there when there is excess. Krsi-go-raksya-vanijyam [Bg. 18.44]. First of all you take care of the cows and engage yourself in agricultural products. Then when there is excess production, you trade, get some money for other purposes. But you... Agriculture means you work for producing food. That is wanted. Why immediately go to trade? Trade is required when there is excess product. Everything is there. Krsi-go-raksya. And the krsi you can produce independently. You simply work. You have got your hands and legs. You till the ground and throw some seed, and it will come. One kilo seeds, you'll get one hundred mounds. Then, when the product is excess, you trade. Everything is there. If you produce food grain, you'll eat nicely and you'll be strong. You'll be able to work more. Our point is take Krsna's instruction. Everything will be perfect. Not that Krsna is advising immediately sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. For that stage you are not prepared. That I know. But in your present stage what you'll do, that is perfect.
Giriraja: You mean I should leave everything and start a farm?
Prabhupada: Where is the question of leaving? Agriculture... You take to agriculture -- that means you leave everything?
Giriraja: Well, what I have now.
Prabhupada: And what you have got? You are asking that "I require now food." That means you have nothing. You have no food even.
"Lord Krsna as Govinda is more inclined to the branas and the cows, indicating thereby that human prosperity depends more on these two items, namely brahminical culture and cow protection. Lord Krsna is never satisfied where these are lacking."
(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.21)
"The cow should be protected, milk should be drawn from the cows, and this milk should be prepared in various ways. One should take ample milk, and thus one can prolong one's life, develop his brain, execute devotional service, and ultimately attain the favor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As it is essential to get food grains and water by digging the earth, it is also essential to give protection to the cows and take nectarean milk from their milk bags."
(Srimad Bhagavatam 8.16.12)
Prabhupada: "Yes. Whatever it may be... We should be satisfied locally by our food, by our cloth, by our milk. That's all. Let the whole world go to hell. We don't care. If you want to save yourself also, you do this. Here is an example. If you want artificial life, city life, and hellish life, you do. But we shall live like this. This is the ideal life."
Adore, Adore Ye All
A poem by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada ~
written on February 25, 1935;
in honor of his Gurudeva Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada.
VYASA-PUJA OFFERING
to
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada
from
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
1.
Adore, adore ye all the happy day,
more blessed than heaven, sweeter than May,
when he appeared at Puri, the holy place,
my Lord and Master His Divine Grace.
2.
Oh! my Master the evangelic angel,
give us thy light, light up our candle.
Struggle for existence a human race,
the only hope, His Divine Grace.
3.
Misled we are, all going astray,
save us, O Lord, our fervent pray.
Wonder thy ways, to turn your face,
adore Thy feet, Your Divine Grace.
4.
Forgotten Krsna, we fallen souls
pay most heavy the illusion's toll.
Darkness around, all untrace,
the only hope, His Divine Grace.
5.
Message of service Thou hast brought,
a healthful life, as Caitanya wrought.
Unknown to all, it's full of brace,
that's your gift, Your Divine Grace.
6.
Absolute is sentient thou hast proved,
impersonal calamity thou hast removed.
This gives us a life, anew and fresh,
worship thy feet, Your Divine Grace.
7.
Had you not come, who had told
the message of Krsna forceful and bold?
That's your right, you have the mace,
save me, a fallen, Your Divine Grace.
8.
The line of service as drawn by you
is pleasing and healthy like morning dew.
The oldest of all but in new dress,
miracle done, Your Divine Grace.
Nama Om Visnu-Padaya Krsna-Presthaya Bhu-Tale Srimate Bhaktivedanta-Svamin Iti Namine Namaste Sarasvate Deve Gaura-Vani-Pracarine Nirvesesa-Sunyavadi Pascatya-Desa-Tarine
Dear Srila Prabhupada,
Please accept my obeisances. All glories to your beloved Spiritual Master Srila Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada.
Before your appearance in the western world in 1965 everything and everyone was like a dead man without any meaning to life.
By your supreme potency you brought the living dead to life. Now you are our life, real life, meaningful life.
By studying your beautiful qualities one may wonder how you obtained them. Maybe you have come from the heavenly planets. We have never experienced such a magnanimous personality as yourself. Soo sweet, soo charming, soo friendly, soo fatherly, soo calm, soo peacful, soo jolly, so kind, soo compassionate, soo wise, soo beautiful, soo merciful, lovingly, soo simple, soo authoritative, soo humble, soo gentle, soo grave. Every word you speak has a deep meaning. Your order cannot be denied.
You are the teacher of everyone because you know everything that has to be known. You only speak what you have heard from the Vedic literature, which was originally spoken by God Himself and you only speak of Him,the greatest personality who has no equal, nor is anyone greater. Everyone is subordinate to Him.
Srila Prabhupada, you have opened our darkened eyes with the torchlight of transcendental knowledge that directs us to associate directly with the Adhoksaja, the Lord beyond our sense perception, and reviving our lost relationship with Him.
By translating the Vedic scriptures as Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS and Srimad Bhagavatam you have caused a revolution in the hearts of honest men who have attentively heard them or read them. In these literatures you have given the lost souls the name of God, His address, His Activity, His form and personality, His entourage, His love for His lost children in the material existence and His desire to reclaim us.
Dear Srila Prabhupada, by distributing the holy name of Krsna all around the world in every town and village you have fulfilled the prediction of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu proving you are not an ordinary man or guru, but directly empowered by Krsna.
It is said in the Caitanya Caritamrita that unless one is empowered by the God Himself, no one can spread the holy name of the Lord around the world.
We can understand by the Vedic scriptures and by authorities in the line of devotional service to Krsna that by your qualities and symptoms that you have descended from eternal kingdom of God, Vaikuntha, a nitya siddha an eternally liberated soul.
Therefore who can imagine the great fortune of one who can gain a slight glimpse of your real eternal nature and obtain your mercy. For without your mercy no one can obtain the mercy of Lord Krsna or make any spiritual advancement. Therefore your lotus feet is our object of meditation.{Guruvastakam 8}
In the same Guruvastakam sloka 7, Vishvanatha Chakravati Thakura sings that the bonafide spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord being His most confidential servant. He states in Guruvastakam sloka 1, that the spiritual master also delivers us from the suffering of material existence where the continual repetition of birth and death is perpetually going on, unknown to the conditioned souls residing in Murtya Loka, the planet of death.
Srila Prabhupada, by your kindness and compassion mysteriously you have entered into our lives and bringing us to our real and original home Goloka Vrindavan.
Therefore let us serve you with all our heart and soul, and serve you according to your instructions in full surrender and spread your glories in every town and village on the globe while distributing your precious books enthusiastically and always chanting Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
Your very fallen disciple and son,
Kapindra Swami
futile as a child
in a candy store
try to stay wild
never-ending "more"
highs born
to float away
love torn
paved in pain
forget you
in search of joy
only tone
i reach to hear
your voice alone
liberate my tear
gravity of my heart
never let me go
i just fall apart
trying to go solo
bathe in your sound
amazing grace
lost soul you found
garlands draped
your robes waterfall
scents of fate
i swoon to your call
your feet a pool
of blossoms fresh
you stand cool
fade the blazing mesh
gift of you breathing
i see clear
Dear Srila Prabhupada,
How can I say say Thank you enough? It's not possible. Out of your great compassion for us you have taken countless other souls from the ignorance of birth in this material world, given us rebirth, retrained us to focus our lives to try and please Krishna, and taught us everything we need to know to make this lifetime successful by advancing in Krishna consciousness.
Our reciprocation, our love for you, will be shown by how we co-operate that's what you told us before you departed this mortal world. And how have we scored in that regard? Very poorly, I have to say, with deep regret.
On reflection I have come to realise that vaisnava sanga is very different from material association. In material life, if we don't get on with someone, if we don't like them or we don't agree with them, we can shun their association. But shunning our godbrothers and godsisters is not an option. If there are issues, we must seriously attend to somehow or other trying to resolve whatever the issues might be, and to always keep the door open to(as you say)work cooperatively.
But of course we can lead a horse to water, but we cannot make it drink. Not everyone cares about your wishes. So I have found my circle of association has factionalised, even amongst Prabhupadanugas The situation is not good.
So on this day I pray to you, Srila Prabhupupada, to kindly help me remember that I must deal with the sore spots in my field of devotee association. Our collective failure to do so is hampering your transcendental mission most dreadfully and this pains us all very much. We are both the perpetrators and the victims of being remiss in these matters.
He reasons ill who says that vaisnavas die
whilst thou art living still in sound.
“What Is Guru”
22 Aug 73 , London
~~~

Prabhupada: Thank you very much. So, tonight's subject matter for speaking is "What is Guru?"

Hamsaduta: Yes.

Prabhupada: So, guru, there are many descriptions. Subject matter is the same, but different way, guru has been described by different acaryas. Their aim is the same, but language or presentation may be little different. So generally guru means,

ajnana-timirandhasya
jnananjana-salakaya
caksur unmilitam yena
tasmai sri-gurave namah

Just like in darkness, ajnana-timirandhasya. Ajnana means ignorance, without knowledge. That is called ajnana. So ajnana is compared..., ignorance, stupidity, is compared with darkness. Just like if you are, if this room, immediately, all lights are off, then it becomes dark. We cannot see where I am sitting, where others are sitting. It becomes a confusion. Similarly, in this material world, we are all in the darkness. This material world is called darkness. It is called tamah. Tamah means darkness. Or timir. Timir means darkness. And actually, it is darkness. Because, because this material world is dark, there is need of sunlight, there is need of moonlight, there is need of electricity. [Aside:} This child disturbing. But there is another world. We get description from the Vedic literature, na yatra bhasayate suryo na sasanko na pavakah. There is another world, spiritual world, where there is no darkness, and therefore, there is no need of sunlight, there is no need of moonlight, there is no need of electricity.

So guru's business is to bring out the disciples from darkness to light. That is guru's business. That is guru. First business is that because he is suf... Everyone is suffering on account of ignorance. Just like you contaminate some disease out of ignorance. You do not know hygienic principle; you do not know that “This thing will contaminate me. This association will contaminate me. This kind of food will contaminate me.” Because we do not know, therefore we contact infections, sometimes suffer from disease. It is very simple to understand. Everyone's... Suppose one commits something criminal due to ignorance, due to ignorance. But in the court, when a man is criminal, in the court, if he says, the criminal, if he says that “I did not know the law,” he'll not be excused. Ignorance is no excuse. Similarly, even a child, he does not know, he catches on fire — the fire will burn. No excuse. The fire will not consider that ‘Here is a child. He does not know. Excuse.’ No. No excuse. So as there are stringent laws of nature or laws of the state, that because you do not know something, you have committed some wrong, you'll be excused — no, that is no, there is no possibility. You have committed something wrong out of ignorance, you must suffer. This is the law nature's law. You cannot... I have (given) many examples. Suppose you can not eat more. Out of ignorance, if you eat more, then you have to fast two days, three days, suffering, or you'll have some disease. You cannot violate any laws of the nature or any laws of the state anywhere. Wherever there is law, if you break it, then you'll suffer. This is ignorance.

Therefore guru's business is... Every human being is suffering in this material world. Nobody can say that “I am not suffering.” It is not possible. There must be suffering. There are three kinds of sufferings. (But) That out of ignorance also, a rascal is suffering, he's saying that “I am very happy.” That is also another ignorance. There are three kinds of sufferings in this material world: adhyatmic, adhibautic, adhidaivic. Suffering on account of my own body and mind — this suffering is not imposed by anyone else. I do it. The same thing, that I cannot digest but I eat more, so there must be dysentery. You must suffer. This is due to my body and mind. That is another one kind of suffering. Another suffering is imposed by other living entities. Just like your enemy or an animal -- or there are ants, mosquitos, flies, they are all causing suffering. You are killing them, and they are trying to give you suffering. This is called struggle. This is called adhibautic, suffering given by other living entities. Suffering caused by myself, this is called adhyatmic. And suffering caused by other living... And there are other sufferings, caused by the nature, superior power, adhidaivic. All of a sudden, there is no rain, no rainfall, and now for want of rainfall, there is no food grain. Excessive heat, excessive chilly cold; earthquake, famine... So many, by natures, imposed by the natures. Flood. So there are three kinds of sufferings in the material world, and everyone is suffering either by one, two or three or..., but nobody can say that ‘I am completely free from suffering.’ That is not possible. And why this suffering? Due to ignorance. I do not know. I am committing sinful life, I am committing mistakes; therefore I am suffering. Therefore guru's business is first to rescue his disciple from ignorance, ignorance. Ajnana-timirandhasya. Everyone is suffering out of ignorance; therefore guru's business is to... Just like we go to a school. We go to a school, we send our children to a school. Why? To save him from suffering; to get education. “If my son does not get education, he'll suffer in the future.” The same process: to get him out of ignorance, to get him relieved from the suffering. Therefore, guru's business is ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya. So sufferings is due to ignorance. Ignorance is compared with darkness. So in the darkness how you can save one? By some light. So guru's business is to take the torchlight of knowledge and present before the ignorant or the disciple in darkness and that gives him, relieves him from the sufferings of darkness or ignorance. This is guru's business.

Then another verse says,

tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet
samit-panih srotriyam brahma-nistham
[MU 1.2.12]

It is Vedic injunction. Somebody was asking whether guru is absolutely necessary. Yes, absolutely necessary. That is the Vedic injunction. The Vedas say, tad-vijnanartham. Tad-vijnana means spiritual knowledge. Spiritual knowledge; for acquiring spiritual knowledge. Tad-vijnanartham. Sa -- one; gurum eva -- eva means must; gurum -- to a guru. Must go to guru. Not “a” guru; “the” guru. Guru is one. Because as it is explained by our Revatinandana Maharaja, guru is coming from the disciplic succession. What five thousand years ago Vyasadeva instructed or Krsna instructed, the same thing we are also instructing. Therefore there is no difference between instruction. Therefore guru is one. Although hundreds and thousands of acaryas have come and gone, but the message is one. Therefore guru cannot be two. Real guru will not talk differently. Some guru says that “In my opinion, you should like this,” and some guru will say, “In my opinion you'll do this” — they are not guru; they are all rascals. Guru has no “own” opinion. Guru has got only one opinion, the same opinion which was expressed by Krsna, Vyasadeva or Narada or Arjuna or Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu or the Gosvamis. You'll find the same thing. Five thousand years ago, Lord Sri Krsna spoke Bhagavad-gita and Vyasadeva wrote it, recorded it. Vyasadeva does not say that “It is my opinion.” Vyasadeva writes, sri bhagavan uvaca: “Whatever writing, it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” He's not giving his own opinion. Sri bhagavan uvaca. Therefore he is guru. He is not misinterpreting the words of Krsna. He's giving as it is. Just like a bearer, peon. Somebody has written you letter, the peon has got the letter. It does not mean he has to correct it or edit it or addition or... No. He'll present it. That is his duty. Then he is guru. He's honest. Similarly, guru cannot be two. Mind that. The person may be different, but the message is the same. Therefore guru is one.

The Vedic instruction is, tad vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet [MU 1.2.12]. Gurum eva, “one must.” Eva means “must.” Abhigacchet, this verb is used when there is the sense of “must.” It never says “Go to a guru,” but he says “Must approach the guru.” Guru is one. Guru cannot be two. Gurum evabhigacchet. And we see also, practically, in the disciplic succession of guru, the same thing is spoken by the guru. Same thing. Repetition of the same subject matter, no other. Krsna said that man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru: [Bg. 18.65] “Just think of Me,” man-mana. “Just become devotee of Me,” man-mana bhava mad-bhakto. “Just worship Me and just offer your obeisances unto Me.” Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. “Just surrender unto Me.” You'll find this instruction in the Bhagavad-gita. The same thing was spoken by all the acaryas. Ramanujacarya also says the same, Madhvacarya says the same thing, Caitanya Mahaprabhu says same thing, the Gosvamis say the same thing, and we are also speaking the same thing. There is no difference. We do not interpret the words of Krsna, that “In my opinion, Kuruksetra means this body.” This is rascaldom. The whole situation has been spoiled by these so-called rascal gurus who gives his own opinion. This is our plain declaration: Let any rascal guru come. We can convince him that he is not guru, because he is speaking differently. We can challenge any rascal. Just like somebody came here, he said that he's God, every one of us God. [Aside:} Stop this. So I asked that “Just find out in the dictionary what is meaning of God. Let us see whether he is God.” The dictionary, as soon as dictionary was consulted, the meaning of God is “the supreme being,” meaning of God. So I asked him, “Are you supreme? If you cannot understand, then find out the meaning of supreme.” Then when he consulted dictionary, the supreme, it is said “the greatest authority.” So I asked him, “Are you the greatest authority?” The rascal could not answer. He does not know even the dictionary meaning, and he's claiming that he's God. This rascaldom is going on, whole world. Big, big rascal swamis, they say, “Why you are finding out God anywhere? You do not see so many rascal gods are loitering in the street?” This is going on. If you simply consult dictionary, you can understand what is the meaning of God. God is so cheap thing, huh? Supreme being. Are you supreme being? Supreme means the highest authority. Highest authority means nobody is equal to him, nobody is greater than him. That is supreme. So these rascals who are claiming to become God, is it a fact that nobody is equal to him, nobody is greater than him? There are so many.

So this kind of guru, this kind of rascal, will not help you. Guru must come from the parampara system by disciplic succession. Five thousand years or five millions of years, what was spoken by the supreme God or guru, the present guru also will say the same thing. That is guru. That is bona fide guru. Otherwise, he's not guru. Simple definition. Guru cannot change any word of the predecessor. There is one instance in Caitanya Mahaprabhu's life. One gentleman, (he) is Vallabha Acarya. He was very much devotee of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He wrote one comment on Srimad-Bhagavatam, Subodhini-tika, it is called. That is recognized, nice tika, comment. But he approached Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He was very great devotee of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So he simply said that “Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord Caitanya, if You hear my comment on the Srimad-Bhagavatam, You'll find it is far better than Sridhara Svami's.” Sridhara Svami is the very old commentator. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately rejected: “Oh, you are claiming that you have written something better than Sridhara Svami?” He chastised him. Svami means another... He sarcastically remarked, the word svami, Sridhara Swami, svami, another svami means “husband. “So He said, svami jiva nahi mane besa bali guni (?)”: “I think one who does not recognize svami, he's a prostitute.” He immediately said, “You do not recognize Sridhara Svami, then you are a prostitute. How can I hear from a prostitute?” He refused. Only word, that “I have written better than Svami.” So this is the process of guru. You cannot disobey the previous acarya or guru. No. You have to repeat the same thing. Not research. Sometimes rascals come, that “You are speaking the same thing. Why don't you speak something new by research work?” We say that we have no intelligence, we cannot make any research. We are... Guru more murkha dekhi koriya vicara [Cc. Adi 7.71]. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that “My Guru Maharaja saw Me a great fool number one.” So one who remains a great fool number one before his guru, he is guru. And one who says that “I'm advanced so much that I can speak better than my guru,” then he's rascal. This is the process.

evam parampara-praptam
imam rajarsayo viduh
sa kaleneha (mahata)
yogo nastah parantapa
[Bg. 4.2]

Krsna said in the Fourth Chapter.

So guru is one. Guru cannot be two. As soon as you find two opinions of guru, either both of them are rascals, or one is still at least rascal. There cannot be two. This is guru. Another place it is said,

tasmad gurum prapadyeta
jijnasuh sreya uttamam
sabde pare ca nisnatam
brahmany upasamasrayam
[SB 11.3.21]

Who needs a guru? A third-class, fourth-class man, ordinary man, doesn't require a guru. Guru, to keep a guru or to have a guru is not a fashion. One who is very serious to understand spiritual life, he requires a guru. Otherwise, there is no need of guru. Just like you keep a dog as a fashion, don't keep a guru. Guru means..., is a question of necessity. One must be very serious to understand what is spiritual life, what is God, what is my relation with God, how to act. When we are very much serious about this subject matter, then we require a guru. Don't go to a guru as a matter of fashion. That is useless. That is useless. Therefore sastra says, tasmad gurum prapadyeta. Because we have to go to guru and surrender there. Without surrendering, you cannot learn anything. If you want to challenge guru, it is not possible. Then you'll learn nothing. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta. Pranipatena. So, just like Arjuna accepted Krsna as guru, he said, sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam tvam prapannam: [Bg. 2.7] “I am now surrendered to you.” That is the process. Tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya [Bg. 4.34]. To... Guru means Krsna's representative, former acaryas' representative. Krsna's... All acaryas are representative of Krsna; therefore guru should be offered the same respect as you offer to God. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta [SB 11.3.21]. Therefore Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says, yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado **. Because guru is bona fide representative of Krsna, or God, so if you surrender to guru, bona fide guru, that means you surrender to God. God is accepting your surrender through the guru. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado. If you surrender to guru, that means Krsna is pleased. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: [Bg. 18.66] surrender. That somebody argues, “Where is Krsna? I shall surrender.” No. You surrender to His representative, then you surrender to Krsna. This is the process.

So guru is the representative of God. Therefore the sastra says, the authority says, saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastrair. Guru is as good as God. Here, in this Vyasa-puja day, we are teaching or they are doing, offering respect to guru. That means they are learning how to offer respect to God. It is not personal affair; it is required. Because they are trying to be God conscious, they must learn how to offer respect to God or God's representative. That is required. Saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastrair. In all the sastra, Vedic literature, guru is described as good as God. But guru will never say that “I am God.” The disciple's duty is to offer respect to guru as he offers respect to God. But guru will never say that “I am... Because my disciples are offering me respect as God, therefore I have become God.” As soon as he thinks so, he becomes dog. He is no more God. Therefore Visvanatha Cakravarti says... Why guru is offered respect like God? Kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya. Guru is offered the same respect as we offer respect to God. Just like in the morning. The other side, aratrika was going on, offering to Krsna, and this side was aratrika was going on to offer respect to the spiritual master. The same respect. But guru will never say, and he's not that. Guru will never say, “Now I have become God.” No. God does not become. God is always God. So God is God and guru is guru. But, as a matter of etiquette, God is the sevya God, worshipable God, and guru is the worshiper God. Just try to understand. Worshipable God and worshiper God. This is. Sevya bhagavan-sevaka bhagavan. Just like guru is addressed: “Prabhupada.” Prabhu means “the Lord” and pada means “the position.” “One who has taken the position of the Lord.” The same thing: saksad-dharitvena, prabhupada. These are the terms, one who is serious to study this science of God, they'll learn all these things. So one who is very serious to understand the science of God, for him a guru is required. Don't try to keep a guru as a matter of fashion, that it has become a fashion to accept somebody, some rascal as guru, and say that “I have got my guru.” What kind of guru you have got? You are talking nonsense. Acaryavan purusa veda. One who has accepted guru, he'll talk sense, where there is meaning. He'll never talk any nonsense. That is the sign that he has got guru. He has got the sacred thread. Yes, he's accepted by bona fide guru. That is the sign, sacred thread. So you are offering good respect to your spiritual master. That is very nice. You are very thankful. But at the same time we should remember that how to carry out the orders of the guru so that people may not think that you are talking nonsense. You must be very careful.

So in the Bhagavad-gita also... I am reciting, citing various verses from various sastras-Kathopanisad, Srimad-Bhagavatam. Now here is another verse. Krsna says, tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya, in the Bhagavad-gita.

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
[Bg. 4.34]

So you have to learn from guru by three processes. What is that? First process is you must surrender. Tasmad gurum prapadyeta [SB 11.3.21]. Surrender. You have to find out such an exalted person where you can willingly surrender, “Yes.” Therefore it is enjoined in the sastras, before making a guru, try to study him, whether you can surrender there. Don't accept any guru all of a sudden as fanatic. No, don't do that. That is the injunction. And guru also must study the disciple who wants to become a disciple; must study him, whether he's fit for becoming a disciple. This is the way of making relationship between guru and disciple. Everything is there provided we take them seriously. Then we can train up how to become bona fide disciple, how to find out bona fide guru, how to establish our relationship with guru and act accordingly and make our life successful. Because guru's business is ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya. Guru's business is to enlighten the disciple, because he's in darkness. In another place in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that parabhavas tavad abodha-jato yavan na jijnasata atma-tattvam. Parabhavah, parabhavah means defeat. Defeat. So whose defeat? Parabhavas tavad abodha-jato: one who is born rascal and fool. Everyone is born rascal and fool. Nobody, otherwise, if you are learned, if you are..., if you know things, then why do you go to a school and college and pass university? It is a fact. Animals. If we do not cultivate knowledge, then we are as good as animals. Now another animal is saying that there is no need of books, and he has become guru. But how you can get knowledge without authoritative studies of books and science and philosophy? But they are trying to avoid this. So imagine what kind of guru and what kind of disciple.

So sastra says, parabhavas tavad abodha-jato. Abodha-jato. Everyone is born rascal, fool. He has to be enlightened, he has to be given knowledge, and he has to receive knowledge to make his life perfect. Therefore parabhavah means one who does not make his life perfect, he's being defeated. What is the defeat? Struggle for existence. We are trying to get better life. Here also, in this life also, we are struggling hard for getting better position. So real better position we do not know. That is described in the Bhagavad-gita: sah amrtatvaya kalpate. Here in this material world there is no better position because there is death. You may possess a very good better position, but you'll have to give it up. Either the better position will give up you, or ultimately you have to give up that better position. You cannot stay. Suppose you have earned millions of dollars, millions of pounds: “Now we have got good bank balance.” You think, ‘Now I am in the better position.’ A little dysentery, or cholera, dysentery -- finished, better position. Or the bank fails -- that better position gone. So there is no better position in this material world. It is a false. Therefore those who are trying to get better position in this material world, they are simply becoming defeated, because there is no better position. He's a rascal. He's thinking this is better position. What is better position? Then Bhagavad-gita says the better position is amrtatva. Sah amrtatvaya kalpate: “Don't die. Keep your position firm.” That is better position. So is there any science to give knowledge how one becomes immortal? Yes, there is. You can become immortal. Not in this material science; not in the so-called universities. But there is knowledge in the Vedic scripture by which you can become immortal. That is better position. No more death, no more birth, no more old age, no more disease. So guru's task is very great responsibility. He has to guide the disciple how to make him quite eligible candidate to get the perfect position, immortality, back to home, back to Godhead.

Thank you very much. (end)

Phalguna Krishna Pancami

Vyasa-Puja homage glorifying
Srila 108 Bhaktisiddanta Sarawati Goswami Thakura. Presented on the commemoration of his appearance by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada at the Radha-Damodara temple
in Vrindavana, India, 1961.

First Vasistya
1. On this day, O my master, I made a cry of grief; I was not able to tolerate the absence of my guru.
2. On this auspicious day I have come with this offering just to worship you, remembering your lotus feet.
3. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's judgement is that renunciation is most important. Not only that, but such knowledge must be delivered to every conditioned being.
4. The beginner in devotional service has no ability to solve this dilemma, but you are a maha-bhagavata, you have given us direction.
5. One bewildered by ignorance, what kind of renunciate can he be? He will only be a "phalgu-vairagi"; renouncing externally.
6. Renunciation is actually the result of real spiritual emotion. Without such feeling it is simply known as show-bottle.
7. But there is another "show-bottle" for the purpose of preaching. That is the Lord's sannyasa by which the Mayavadis are defeated.
8. Lord Caitanya's Philosophy is beyond varnasrama; it is Bhagavata dharma, for putting an end to all cheating processes of religion.
9. Performing dry renunciation there can be no real preaching. Therefore "Yukta vairagya" is given the highest essential understanding.
10. "That sannyasa which I have given you" is for preaching in devotion. The faithless sense enjoyers are unable to understand this.

Second Vasistya

11. Generally the sannyasis renounce everything and go and stay in the mountain caves, but you, O master, keep your sannyasis in mansions of marble.
12. To see a sense enjoyer is just like drinking poison, but you, O my master, go far and near, even abroad, to give them your darsana.
13. Mlecchas and Yavanas are forbidden to enter the Hindu temples, but you my Lord, make them chairmen and sit them in the assembly of devotees.
14. Hindus are not allowed to cross the ocean, but you send your devotees overseas to preach.
15. In the cities of Kali-yuga, the instructions of the bona fide spiritual preceptors are forbidden. Still you remain here in any way possible.
16. The devotees want to hide in a secluded place to perform their bhajan. You, however, do not accept this in your judgement.
17. Whenever there is an increase in population, there in that place preaching is to be found.
18. In London you want a student hostel. You explain that it must be first-class.
19. In the land of barbarians a student hostel for preaching Hari-Katha! Who can understand the significance of these things?
20. To resolve all the apparent contradictory statements is not the play of some incompetent fool.
21. If everyone simply sat down together and considered these things, what nice preaching there could be.
22. What is your order also, that everyone, coming together, should merge in your message and preach it to the world.
23. If everyone just initiates then there will only be a contradictory result. As long as it goes on there will be only failure.
24. Now even, my godbrothers, you return here to the order of our master, and together we engage in his puja.
25. But simply a festival of flowers and fruits does not constitute worship. The one who serves the message of the guru really worships him.
26. The service of the message is the real meaning of the Vedas. Don't be proud, brothers, come back to this.
27. Kalidas Nag (a learned man who was defeated by Srila Saraswati Thakura and later became his disciple), that master said in public forum one day.
28. That Kali's mission was to kill the entire world while the essential meaning of Lord Caitanya's message was kept locked up in a cage.
29. O shame! My dear brothers, aren't you embarrassed? In the manner of businessmen you increase your disciples.
30. Our master said to preach. Let the neophytes stay in the temples and ring the bells.

Third Vasistya

31. All these things are not our spiritual master's preaching methods. These are all the things done by the caste Gosvamis.
32. But just take a look at the terrible situation that has arisen. Everyone has become a sense enjoyer and has given up preaching.
33. In the temples they have also begun to lock the doors. Preach this bhagavata dharma, don't hesitate.
34. Within this world is another world, Whose sound is the unequaled penetrating force.
35. The preaching that "mullah (Muslim priest) only goes as far as the mosque and no further" should be put to an end today.
36. From the seas, across the earth, penetrate the universal shell, come together and preach this Krishna consciousness.
37. Then our master's service will be in proper order. Make your promise today. Give up all your politics and diplomacy.
38. Everyone come together on this day and make your valued comment. The five of you get together and decide what should be done.
39. You have become renouncers, brothers, so renounce everything. But if you also renounce the order of the spiritual master, then what kind of renunciation is that?
40. The one who renounces the guru's order (guru tyagi) and the one who tries to enjoy the assets of his spiritual master (guru-bhogi) are two kinds of useless persons. First become a servant of your spiritual master (guru-sevi) and then you will understand things clearly.

Forth Vasistya

41. If there is only one Supreme Lord, then a true sadhu, if his faith increases, he gives up the desire for profit, distinction and adoration in the material world.
42. Your gold, brother, is the father of sense gratification. This meaningful statement was spoken by Srila Prabhupada himself.
43. Give up your wealth for preaching. Sit down together and make some special judgement.
44. The Supreme Lord says that everything is Mine. Don't protest. Just unite and preach.
45. Srila Prabhupada gave this final message himself. Take care to follow that completely in all respects.
46. Otherwise your sannyasa will be wasted and useless. O saintly ones, be careful; afterwards you will regret.
47. So what is the difficulty for all of us to come together in this way and why do all these things even have to be said to you?
48. Give up your stubbornness, there is no time. Come all my brothers on this auspicious holy occasion.

Fifth Vasistya

49. When will that day come when there will be a temple established in every house in every corner of the world?
50. When the big court judge will be a Gaudiya Vaisnava with tilak beautifully decorating his forehead.
51. A Vaisnava winning votes will be elected president of the land and preaching will spread everywhere.
52. The demons simply plunder the Lord's wealth. The hapless populace cry, "Hai Hai" in distress.
53. The demons want so many plans just to cheat the people. They sell wheat flour at 32 rupees a mound.
54. Will opening a factory fill a hungry man's belly? Being oppressed by starvation they will eat grass and mango pits.
55. Wearing a two pisa string a man is called a brahmin. Wearing a saffron cloth he has become a sannyasi.
56. The householders beg from sannyasis, and why not? The sannyasis have tens of millions of rupees in the bank.
57. As the days pass, the influence of Kali-yuga increases and the poor are crying in distress.
58. Ten thousand cows are killed daily and the nations expert leaders are all eating untouchable foodstuffs.
59. People of muddy intelligence increase day by day. A man and his wife separate on mere word.
60. Everyone has become a witch by the influence of this age. Everyone is unhappy due to the absence of the mercy of the Vaisnavas.
61. The Vaisnavas are famous as "para dukha dukhi." This fame will increase as the preaching increases.
62. If eternally pure devotional service to Krsna is awakened in everyone, then Kali will flee, screaming of his own accord.
63. "Praninan upakaraya" do work for the benefit of all living beings. This is Mahaprabhu's teachings. This is the storehouse of happiness in this life and the next.
64. So much work has fallen into your hands, so gather together and do it.
65. Vasudeva Datta said to the Lord, paying his obeisances, save all the living beings in the material world.
66. Give all their sins and suffering to me, who am the lowest of all. In this way all the suffering and miseries of the fallen will end.
67. He was the best of the Vaisnavas, para dukha dukhi. He knows that there is not real happiness in gratifying the senses.
68. And what kind of mercy can the non-Vaisnavas give? They simply make offenses by their Daridra Narayana philosophy.
69. The mercy of the Vaisnavas is scientific and authorized, without their mercy this world is simply insurmountable maya.
70. If there is a kingdom of Visnu and Vaisnavas on the surface of the earth, then the world will be happy--so say the great sages and rishis.
71. Why is everyone crying for Rama-rajya? The only way it can be had is if there is a Visnu centered kingdom.
72. Lord Krsna enthroned King Yudhisthira; then the whole world was rich and fortunate due to the qualities of a Vaisnava.
73. The streams, rivers, trees and fields and mountains, were all full of fruits and flowers. The milk laden cows were floating in abundant milk.
74. The birds, beasts and lower creatures were all non-envious. Material life in the Vaisnava kingdom was regulated and perfect.
75. All immersed in bliss, singing the glories of the Hari. The hearts of Vaisnavas dance in ecstasy to see this.
76. The entire world is filled with the use of material objects, without a trace of devotion to the Lord.
77. Still they are searching after peace. Preach Krsna consciousness; fulfill their desires.
78. Today my brothers, get to this task. Save the battered souls by your preaching.
79. Srila Prabhupada, please be merciful today. This time have compassion. You are not a conditioned soul of this material world.
80. Whatever independence we have, let it be cast to the waters. The lowly Abhay offers this presentation today.

varnasrama self- sufficient farm community

The Prabhupada Sankirtan Society
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaFounder-acarya of the International Society for Krishna-Consciousness

Dear devotees and friends!

The PSS is forever dedicated to continue His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s ISKCON AS IT IS. We are accepting Srila Prabhupada as the teacher of everyone and the life of all people. He is the divine incarnation of Lord Sri Krishna- shaktyavesa avatara, fully empowered by the Lord to elevate all beings to the platform of Krishna Consciousness, where everyone becomes peaceful and prosperous.

This can be accomplished by the re-establishment of the varnasrama system: The social, political and spiritual structure that was prevelant in the three previous yugas, before the advent of so many 'isms' characterized in the present age of Kali.
Bhagavad-gita 4.13, translation: "According to the three modes of material nature and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me. And, although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable."Because it is created by the Lord Himself, it is the perfect system for the happiness of all human beings, regardless of caste or creed. Srila Prabhupada as God’s representative is guiding us to establish it, for he knows it will make the whole human society happy in all respects.

Lecture April 02, 1974: "So if you want to remodel your life, the society, the human society, nationally or internationally--everything is spoken here, international--then you have to take to the advice of Krsna. This is the purpose of Krsna consciousness movement: wholesale, thorough, overhauling of the human society. We have not manufactured anything, concocted things. It is very scientific. If you actually want to fulfill the mission of your life, then you have to take to this advice of Bhagavad-gita, very scientific and spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without any defects."The Prabhupada Sankirtan Society has taken up the order and plan of Srila Prabhupada to establish the Varnasrama System, taking directions exclusively from Srila Prabhupada.

Bhagavad-gita 11.34 purport: “The plans of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are understood by his mercy and the plans of the devotees are as good as His plans. One should follow such plans and be victorious in the struggle for existence.”

Srimad Bhagavatam 5.1.24 purport: ”It is this daiva-varnasrama that should be introduced all over the world to continue a perfect society of Krishna consciousness.”

Become completely self-sufficient, depending on the Lord, His pure devotee, the land and mother cow.Letter to Rupanuga December 18, 1974:"Our farm projects are an extremely important part of our movement. They should be developed as an ideal society depending on natural products not industry."
